Ingredient Spotlight - Canadian Maple Syrup

Writer's picture: Mary DraperMary Draper

One of our most commonly used ingredients (right after almond flour and tapioca) is organic maple syrup. We use it as a sweetener, a healthier replacement for processed sugars, but did you know it has health benefits too?

Pure maple syrup is high in anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory properties.

FUN FACT: It has the same anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory properties as green tea!!

It contains nutrients like:

Manganese that helps in energy production.

Riboflavin that helps in metabolic pathways.

Zinc that helps your immune system.

Magnesium that helps lower risk of heart disease.

Calcium that helps strengthen bones & teeth.

Potassium that helps with blood pressure.

Comparing pure maple syrup to white sugar, maple syrup totally wins out with higher mineral and antioxidant content and a lower glycemic index too!! Plus it’s sweeter than sugar, so you can use less of it, while adding an amazing moisture and rich flavour to your baked goods.

To make it even better we only use organic 100% pure grade A Canadian maple syrup in our baking here at Mary's Mindful BakeHouse. The best you can get!! We’re pretty lucky to live so close to so many amazing maple farms.

DIY Blueberry Maple Syrup - Love using syrup on your morning pancakes/waffles? Jazz it up a bit by making a fruit syrup! Just combine 1 cup of maple syrup with 1 cup of blueberries (or another berry) in a medium saucepan, and cook on medium for about 10 minutes. Strain or blend if you don’t like fruit chunks. Enjoy!!
